Our Team
Michael Liang, Founder and Chief Investment Officer
Michael Liang has been Foundation’s CIO from the start. He is a leader in the Asia hedge fund space, as he
founded Foundation Asset Management in 2006 when China hedge funds were still at a nascent stage. Under him,
Foundation Asset Management has transformed from a start-up boutique firm into a full-fledged, leading asset
management firm.
Michael’s differentiated industry knowledge has propelled Foundation through an array of
market environments, with Foundation now one of the longest standing China hedge funds with a 15-year track
record. He covered base metals in Australia during the commodities boom and was responsible for industrials
during the Asia Financial Crisis and China WTO cycle. This allowed Michael to develop a unique framework of
understanding cycles and inflections.
He is regularly invited to present at media and conferences, including CNN, Bloomberg TV, CCTV
and HK’s popular financial journal Economic Digest and Ming Pao, sharing his view on the economy, markets,
investment strategy and ideas.
Michael started his career with Macquarie Bank in Australia in 1993 as an investment analyst,
then working at Societe Generale, Daiwa Securities and DBS Vickers. Prior to founding Foundation, he was a
Director at United Overseas Bank. He has an MBA degree from Peking University, degree in Economics from
Renmin University of China and Wollongong University in Australia. He is also a CFA.
